Everyone builds their list differently; I recently stuck up a post on the overlords facebook group asking for opinions and was pretty surprised by the variety of responses. I had thought that list building was generally a compromise between fluff and competitiveness (or a lack thereof in either). But many people, it turns out, place quite a high emphasis on an aesthetic theme (rather than fluffy theme) or building a list around the models they enjoy painting. There was also a number who tried to do things as economically as possible (moneywise, rather than pointswise) which I suppose is a big motivating factor what with the current prices and something I had completely overlooked.
So how does this fit in with where I’m going? Well the World Eaters are to all extents and purposes finished; I just need to procure some yellow paint for the headlights to finish off the vehicles, after which I will be sticking them onto ebay. This means it’s time to start looking at properly getting going with the Word Bearers which means needing a plan.
The approach I am going to take is to focus on a couple of concepts: firstly I am going to try and get everything I need as cheaply as possible which will mean searching for some ebay bargains and a good deal of fairy power spray. Secondly, the theme is going to be given top priority. As the Chaos dex is pretty broad in customizability this will require the self-imposition of some rules to keep with the Word Bearers USP.
1. The army must be lead by either a Lord (Coryphaeus) or Dark Apostle – taking both in larger games (say above 2000 or 2500 points). This means the list will be unlikely to either contain a Warpsmith or Sorcerer at the standard 1500 points due to needing to fit everything else in. I have toyed with the idea of using a low level sorcerer as a counts as Dark Apostle due to the psychic ability that some do seem to possess (at least in the Anthony Reynolds books) but think it’s only fair to give the Dark Apostle a run out first.
2.Everything will be completely undivided. The WBs worship the pantheon of Gods favouring none above the others. Generally I don’t agree with the ad hoc warband where every unit is dedicated to the god who’s mark coincidentally seems to give them the greatest in game benefit – bikers of nurgle, obliterators of tzeentch, 4th ed lash deamon prince etc. This, I think, will be a pretty big handicap as it means I can’t use the marks to reduce the weakness of certain units (eg, no T5 obliterators to stop them being doubled out). It also precludes the taking of any cult troops.
3. All non-vehicle units must be taken in units of 8 (where possible) or multiples of 8. This reflects the 8 points of the chaos star and is consistent with the 8 man coteries in the WB trilogy books. I’ve also heard conflicting reports that coteries are generally formed as 12 man squads but this is pretty impractical in game terms. If an IC joins a squad it may increase the squad size above this number, eg 8 bikers plus lord on bike. Alternatively, a coterie may be taken as a 7man squad if it is to be joined by an IC – ie 7 bikes and a lord forming an 8 man coterie, but in this case, the IC will not be allowed to leave the unit. Overall this is going to present a pretty big challenge to list building as it closes the option of adding single models to squads to make up points, and requires enough points for an 8 man squad if a squad is to be added to the list at all.
4. No flyers in games below 2000 points. The chaos flyer is pretty mean, probably outside the ability of a quad gun to deal with meaning my opponent would need serious dedicated AA in his list he is unlikely if he is not warned. On top of that, the baleflamer heldrake strikes me as a hugely unfun unit to play against if you don’t have the tools to deal with it.
5. No special characters – this one goes without saying, there are no WB ones and I’ve spoken before about how in a setting as large as 40k, the same few characters shouldn’t be popping up on every table.
That seems enough to be getting on with. Next time I will discuss the list I want to build taking into account all of these restrictions.
