I am the worst kind of ideas slag (of all the bad kinds). I think since the start of my interest in the hobby about a decade ago I have only finished 2 armies before feeling the need to try my hand at something new and I feel a little stirring on interest every time I listen to discussion about another codex (on a podcast or some sort of comparable 40k media).
So I think you can see where this is going. But before I go there, there is something else I want to announce. I am not the sort of guy to find himself shin deep in plastic, struggling to find space for a 20,000 point army, this much should be clear from above (but not that there is anything wrong with this approach, in fact it’s pretty handy if you’re a fan of apocalypse), but I digress. The point is, I don’t see the need to stockpile 3000 points of every race in the game to collect dust and occasionally make it to the table (recently I’ve been playing less frequently than I would like anyway), and half of the fun comes from building painting and assembling it anyway, so while having a here’s one I made earlier’ may be convenient it’s not the way I want to go about conducting my collections.
And so now to the announcement; I am going to sell my guard. I’m not saying I will be offloading them as soon as humanly possible, but if an offer comes along then I will seriously consider it. This is a result of 2 things, firstly I did a price up of what I have using current GW prices, and after being revived by the paramedics, I realised that what I have amounts to a pretty sizeable wad of dough sitting in my cupboard. £500 if it was still in boxes and apparently there are people out there willing to pay a pretty hefty premium for assembled and reasonably well painted stuff (I never thought myself a great painter but checking out ebay recently I may as well call myself a pro). Second, I want to start a new army (refer to paragraph 1 for explanation).
Thusly, I have a plan for the future of my hobby. In light of the fact that 40k keeps its value reasonably well in the second hand market, the potential premium on painted armies and discount retailers (thank you Dark Sphere), I am going to adopt a rolling turnover system of army building. So here is my plan, at any time I will have 2-3 armies of various stages of completion. I have 2 armies currently and am looking to adopt a third, so in order to fund this I will sell the oldest army I own (in this case the guard), and so predictably unconventional army lifecycle model (2012) continues with each new idea funded by the sale of another. Meaning that at any point in time I have either:
Complete (1), complete (2) or complete (1, for sale) complete (2, for playing) and work in progress.
As for my next project? Still undecided, currently I am leaning towards Word Bearers although Dark Eldar is still a very tempting option, but that can be a discussion for another day, as I have rambled on long enough.
Tara for now.
